From the moment your examiner greets you, here’s what to expect:
1. Meeting Your Examiner
• The examiner will call your name in the waiting room, check your provisional licence, and ask you to sign a declaration that your car is insured and that you’ve lived in the UK for the required period.
2. The Eyesight Check
• You’ll be asked to read a number plate from 20 metres. This must be passed before the test can continue.
3. ‘Show Me, Tell Me’ Vehicle Safety Questions
• You’ll answer one “tell me” question before you start driving, and one “show me” question while you’re on the move.
4. The Driving Test Itself (around 40 minutes)
• You’ll drive on a variety of roads and traffic conditions.
• You’ll be asked to carry out one manoeuvre (parallel park, bay park (forward or reverse)or pull up on the right).
• Around 20 minutes will be independent driving, following either a sat nav or road signs.
• In 1 in 3 tests, you’ll also be asked to perform an emergency stop.
5. Returning to the Test Centre
• The examiner will ask you to park safely, and the test will end.
• They’ll then total up your driving faults and give you your result straight away.
⸻
✅ If You Pass
• You’ll be given a pass certificate and can start driving immediately on your own.
• Your examiner will ask if you’d like your full licence sent automatically (They will keep your provisional and destroy it, your new licence will be sent normally within 20 working days)
• Many learners take a photo with their certificate – it’s a moment to be proud of!
⸻
❌ If You’re Not Successful
• The examiner will explain why you didn’t pass and give you written feedback on your test sheet.
• You can use this with your instructor to focus on the areas that need improvement.
• You can reapply for another test immediately, but won’t get a date till after 10 working days has passed
